Fenwick Named Vice Chancellor for Research

June 19, 2007

To: UT Knoxville Faculty and Staff
From: Chancellor Loren Crabtree

Dr. Bradley W. FenwickI'm pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Bradley W. Fenwick, the current vice president for research at Virginia Tech University, as the new vice chancellor for research for UT Knoxville.

Dr. Fenwick's experience as an administrator and a researcher makes him an excellent fit for our campus. He brings a strong background and a passion and enthusiasm for building on our university's strengths, including our critical partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Before he went to Virginia Tech in 2004, Brad served for two years as the chief science adviser for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's competitive research program. In this role, he oversaw research in a wide variety of subject areas in the biological, environmental, physical and social sciences.

Prior to that time, Brad was a faculty member at Kansas State University, where he also received his bachelor's and master's degrees, as well as a doctorate in veterinary medicine. He also earned a Ph.D. from the University of California at Davis. He has participated in the prestigious Fellows program of the American Council on Education.

Dr. Fenwick will continue his research in microbiology and infectious diseases of animals at UT. He is currently an editor of the Journal of Microbiology, and has published more than 130 research papers.

I also want to recognize the hard work and leadership of Dr. Lee Riedinger, both as the chair of the search committee for the new vice chancellor and in his role as the interim vice chancellor for research. His efforts over the past year have paved the way for a smooth transition, and established a strong foundation as Dr. Fenwick assumes the leadership of our campus research efforts.

In addition, the university has named Dr. Greg Reed, professor and head of the civil and environmental engineering department, as the new associate vice chancellor for research, taking the place of Dr. Frank Harris, who recently retired after serving in the position since 2002. Greg brings great research and administrative skills to this position. We are grateful for Frank's distinguished service to the university.
