FERPA Administration and Oversight

To: Knoxville-area UT Students, Faculty and Staff
From: Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek
Date: December 7, 2009

Effective immediately, the Office of the Registrar will have oversight and administration of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) for the university. This will include maintaining and updating the campus FERPA policy and all related documentation (i.e., standard release forms, training documentation, and Web sites) as needed.

The Registrar will be the FERPA compliance officer and will be responsible for ensuring that faculty and staff members are informed of their FERPA responsibilities on an annual basis. Faculty training should be coordinated through the Office of the Provost, and staff training should be coordinated with Human Resources, and other offices as appropriate.
