January 2011 marks the 50th anniversary of the first African-American undergraduates admitted to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. We'll commemorate this important anniversary all year with special events and speakers, starting with a kickoff event at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 11.

FERPA and Student Privacy
Staff and faculty at the university who have access to student information are charged with the responsibility of handling that information in a protective manner that complies with all FERPA regulations. Beginning this semester, fall 2010, all faculty and staff are required to thoroughly review the new online presentation that details current FERPA policies and procedures.

Director of CIRE Announced
UT and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have named physics professor Lee Riedinger as director of the UTK/ORNL Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education (CIRE).

Vice Chancellor Resignation
Brad Fenwick has resigned from his position as vice chancellor for research and engagement and will resume his appointment as professor in the UT College of Veterinary Medicine. Wes Hines, professor of nuclear engineering, will serve as interim vice chancellor.

Athletics Reporting Line
The Board of Trustees on Thursday voted on bylaw changes that will move the athletics reporting line from the UT president to the UT Knoxville campus. The transfer will be effective July 1.

Open Forum for Faculty and Staff on April 13
Chancellor Cheek will host an open forum at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, in the Shiloh Room of the University Center. It will begin a brief overview and and will save most of the time for questions from the audience.

Chancellor Cheek on Campus Civility
"We have had an increase in the number of reported incidents of actions and language that reflect bias on our campus," UT Knoxville Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek said. "These actions include derogatory and racist language found in our dormitories. I am saddened and outraged by this behavior because it does not reflect our campus values or the mission of this great university. We will not tolerate disrespect, racism or bias on our campus."

Former Vice President Gore to Receive Honorary Degree
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has decided to grant an honorary doctorate to former Vice President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore. The degree was approved by the Board of Trustees at their meeting today in Martin.

Congressional Internship Program
The Congressional Internship Program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to work with Tennessee's Legislators in Washington, D.C. Interns will work closely with legislative staff on a variety of projects, as well as assist with clerical tasks, depending upon the office in which they are placed. The deadline for applications is March 1, 2010.

As we all know, the people affected are lacking the most basic necessities and your contributions can help as the nation struggles to recover. The Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) has distributed a list of established organizations responding to the crisis.
