The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the college and reports to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Salary is nationally competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, the state's fast-moving flagship and land grant institution, is a Carnegie doctoral research extensive university. Bolstered by the new HOPE lottery scholarships, Tennessee attracts students who number among the best in the state, region, and nation and has just enrolled the best freshman class in its history (24.9 avg. ACT, 50.7% of the class scoring 25 or better). The university boasts a newly invigorated honors program and offers the impressive research opportunities and resources of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Its 26,000 students (20,000 undergraduate and 6,000 graduate and professional students) study on an attractive campus covering 290 acres adjacent to the Tennessee River and downtown Knoxville.

The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest college within the university and houses over 500 tenured and tenure-track faculty, who carry out innovative research, creative projects, and scholarship in the arts, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences. Comprised of 22 academic departments, three schools, and 14 interdisciplinary programs, Arts and Sciences is the heart of academic life at the university. The college drives most of the university's general education instruction, offers 60 undergraduate majors and pre-professional programs, and supports 50 graduate programs offering masters and doctoral degrees. This thriving college also sponsors a diverse array of research centers, institutes, and fine arts venues, including Joint Institutes for Neutron Sciences, Computational Sciences and Biological Sciences in conjunction with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Marco Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, the Planetary Geoscience Institute and the Clarence Brown Theatre Company.

Duties:

  • Articulate a strategic vision and long-term goals for the college
  • Provide direction and incentives for research and creative achievement
  • Work with faculty to foster innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to undergraduate and graduate education
  • Promote and support all aspects of diversity
  • Provide aggressive leadership in college development activities
  • Nurture relationships with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory
  • Plan and direct the college's operational, personnel, and budgetary polices and procedures
  • Provide support for the recruitment, retention, and development of faculty and staff
  • Provide direction and incentives for community service and outreach activities for the college
  • Foster international education and research activities
  • Support the application of appropriate technology in instruction and learning

Qualifications:

  • An earned terminal degree and evidence of scholarly, professional, or creative achievement sufficient for appointment as full professor in one of the departments within the college
  • Successful administrative experience, preferably above departmental level, in a research university, foundation, or equivalent
  • Evidence of engagement in initiatives and projects that foster diversity
  • Evidence of effective leadership, management and communication skills
  • Evidence of successful development activities
  • Effective knowledge of and commitment to benchmarks of success in arts, humanities, natural sciences and social sciences
