Notable UT Woman Award
Every year since 1995, the Commission for Women has recognized a woman whose accomplishments bring distinction to the university.
Dr. Nancy Goslee, Distinguished Service Professor of English and last year’s Macebearer, is this year’s Notable UT Woman. She began her career at the University of Tennessee in 1970 after graduating from Smith College and Yale University. An internationally recognized and award-winning scholar, her work examines the British Romantic writers of the early 19th century. A patient, thorough, and demanding mentor to her students, she has contributed significantly to the introduction of feminist topics in the curriculum, both in her own courses and by chairing Women’s Studies for seven years. She is a loyal advocate for advancing the status of women on campus, being active on the most important committees that concern women faculty, including chairing the Commission for Women from 2001 to 2003. Her nomination says it best: “Professor Goslee’s career stands as a testimony to an inner strength and courage and helped to advance the status of women in a profession that was at worst hostile and at best indifferent to the particular challenges they faced.”
