2009 Excellence in Advising Awards
Brian Edwards
Brian Edwards is the associate head of chemical and biomolecular engineering, has significant administrative duties outside of his advising role. He is, however, the sole adviser for students in special circumstances, such as transfer students, those with co-op work arrangements and those seeking a second degree. He is always on call and is extremely patient in all of his interactions, as well as diligent in solving problems that arise. Edwards also serves as research adviser for a number of undergraduate students and as the college’s faculty mentor for the Ronald McNair Summer Program. Additionally, he directs the S-STEM Scholarship Program for students from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
MILLIE GIMMEL
Millie Gimmel is an assistant professor of Spanish, and knows that her advising role goes well beyond completing the required checklists. She works with students on their short- and long-term goals and gets them to ponder the questions they should explore about their education. She has an uncanny ability to recite a student’s biography, despite working with at least 200 current advisees; and her advising role doesn’t end when a student graduates. She has overhauled the advising procedures to better serve students and to help them see the bigger picture.
LAURIE ROBERSON
In the College of Architecture and Design, Laurie Roberson is described as the friendly voice for the students who phone, the helpful guide for those who tour, and the ever-consistent supporter throughout a student’s entire academic career. Along with advising on curriculum, she is a trouble-shooter who works to answer any question or resolve any concern. She’s also a bridge builder, talking to students about their other interests and gently encouraging them to get involved in organizations and activities so they get the most from their UT experience.
