2009 Ready for the World Award
JON SHEFNER
Jon Shefner's efforts to encourage intercultural and international awareness objectives have been nothing short of visionary. Shortly after his arrival on campus in 1999, Shefner worked to create the Center of Excellence for Global Studies. More than $150,000 was first awarded to form the program, which is now one of the fastest-growing undergraduate majors.
Shefner’s work has led many students to pursue careers finding solutions to the world’s problems. To quote just one of many student letters praising Shefner: “I left class every Tuesday and Thursday frustrated by the not-so-positive realities of this world, but encouraged to do something about them. He presented to me an opportunity—one that allowed me to see the interconnectedness of people, things and ideas in the world.”
