2010 Excellence in Advising

Jamia StokesJamia Stokes

Jamia Stokes, coordinator for recruitment and retention in the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, views her advising role as a key factor in student success. For Stokes, advising is more than academics; it’s life counseling that embodies the entire student experience. She engages students inside and outside the advising office, assessing student perceptions and building on them to make sure students have the best experience possible while at UT.

Matthew Theriot
Matthew Theriot
Matthew Theriot, associate professor in the College of Social Work, is a true champion for his students and the college. Working closely with students to help them navigate the curriculum, Theriot keeps a close eye on how best to maximize each student’s education. He was critical in the development of an honors program in social work, and his efforts as director of the B.S. in social work program have helped to double the program’s size.

Garry MenendezGarry Menendez
Garry Menendez, associate professor in the department of plant sciences, knows that advising is more than just an academic checklist. He understands the link between thoughtful, engaged advising and excellent learning outcomes.
