2010 Charles R. Burchett Extraordinary Contributions to Campus Life
Chinese Students & Scholars Association
The Chinese Students & Scholars Association is the largest international student organization on campus and serves more than 400 Chinese students and visiting Chinese scholars. In the past year, the group published a student handbook for new Chinese students, many of whom are traveling internationally for the first time. The handbook works in conjunction with an online registration system to help arrange pickup and accommodations for students coming to Knoxville from China. The association also has organized a number of highly successful activities to share Chinese culture with students across campus.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity
After being gone from campus for a number of years, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity saw an entirely new membership last spring. In less than a year, the group has organized many successful community service projects, including collecting food for the less fortunate, a bowling event to raise money for Haiti relief, and an ongoing partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters. In addition, the fraternity has hosted campus-wide educational events such as a sexual awareness forum, a relationship forum, and a seminar called "Money Management in Black America."
Student Services Branch of the Student Government Association
The Student Services Branch of the Student Government Association is made up of nine committees, 24 sub-directors, and 250 members, all of whom work tirelessly to tackle issues such as diversity, technology, academics, and more. In the past year, the group partnered with other campus organizations to introduce new events designed to educate and entertain students. Each of the committees within the Student Services Branch has created a new event or program in the past year. This is coupled with traditional Student Services events like Diversity Week, Orange & White Week, and the State of the State trip.
