2010 Hardy Liston Jr. Symbol of Hope
David Fox
David Fox, associate professor in the College of Architecture and Design, has represented the university in underserved communities across the region for more than 15 years. His work with the Urban Program in Sustainable Design (UPSIDE) connected UT architecture students with inner-city high school students in Knoxville and Chattanooga to analyze, design, and plan strategies to build houses in the students’ neighborhoods. Fox also has represented UT in rural environments, partnering the college with community organizations to provide housing and facilities to the elderly and disabled in Scott County. His work and energy have brought a powerful belief in the potential of architecture to change society at the most fundamental levels.
The Hardy Liston Jr. Symbol of Hope is awarded to faculty/staff/alumni who have demonstrated a commitment to the development of individuals in our society through cultivating and enriching the human mind and spirit.
Presented by the Commission for Blacks, the Hardy Liston Symbol of Hope Award goes to faculty, staff or friends of the university who demonstrate a commitment to diversity, multiculturalism and appreciating the differences of people and cultures on our campus.
