Chancellor’s Excellence in Teaching Award

The Chancellor’s Awards are designed to recognize excellence in teaching and advising across UTK.  These awards specifically seek to reward those individuals who are uniquely effective in their roles and make exceptional contributions to student life.  in traditional (classroom) or nontraditional educational settings.

The Chancellor’s Excellence in Teaching Award specifically seek to reward those individuals who are uniquely effective in teaching, at any level and in any educational format.

  1. Previous recipients of this award (within the past 5 years) are ineligible.
  2. Nominees must have a minimum of two years teaching experience in a University of Tennessee Knoxville unit at the time of nomination (and be able to provide teaching evaluations for the most recent two years).
  3. Academic rank is not a factor, although graduate teaching assistants are ineligible for this award.  Other awards are available specifically for graduate students.
  4. During the academic year of nomination, nominees must be assigned a teaching responsibility that matches at least one-half the usual teaching workload for peers in their unit.
  5. Nominees must be available for observation or interview by the Council during the month of February.

Summary of Awards Process

  • Nomination Letters will be solicited from administrators, faculty, and students during the month of October.
  • Unless the number of nominees is excessively large, supporting material will be solicited from all nominees before the end of Fall Semester. Supporting material at this stage will be limited to:
    • 3 page curriculum vitae
    • 1 page statement of Teaching Philosophy
    • Student Evaluations of Teaching from a maximum of 3 classes taught within the preceding 2 years. (numeric results only, and only if unavailable from Tenn 101)
    • Representative course syllabi from up to 3 courses for which student evaluations are available
  • Up to 20 Semifinalists will be notified and allowed to provide additional supporting materials (such as a teaching portfolio) for Council review. (This step will be skipped if applications are such that finalists can be determined at this stage).
  • Selection of finalists by the Council will occur in early January.
  • Up to 15 finalists will be notified and classroom or other observation visits will be arranged during the months of January and February.
  • Up to 3 full-time, tenure track and 3 part-time or non-tenure track final winners will be selected and names provided to the Chancellor’s office.
  • Awards will be announced at the Spring Honors Banquet.

The Chancellor's Honors Banquet is held each spring to recognize students, faculty, staff and friends of the University of Tennessee for their extraordinary achievements.
