Dr. Howard C. Johnson
Dr. Howard C. Johnson, Professor of Mathematics and former Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of North Texas (UNT), is a nationally recognized mathematics educator who has held a number of major leadership positions in higher education. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he received BA and MS degrees in mathematics from Chicago State University, an MS in Mathematics from University of Illinois at Chicago and his PhD from Northwestern University.
During his tenure as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at UNT, Johnson instituted a strategic hiring and salary enhancement plan. More than $6 million in two years went into faculty raises and thirty-four tenure track position were added.
Prior to coming to UNT, Dr. Johnson held the positions of Executive Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, Dean of the Graduate School, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, as well as Professor of Mathematics and Mathematics Education at Syracuse University. Dr. Johnson’s research and program development have led to the publication of several textbook series with Harcourt and Addison-Wesley, as well as articles, chapters, instructional materials, and many public presentations.
In his position as Dean of the Graduate School, he led the Syracuse University Preparing Future Faculty program, which gave graduate students opportunities to prepare for teaching, research and professional service. Students experienced faculty life in a variety of institutional settings.
As Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, he was charged primarily with increasing the diversity of the faculty at Syracuse University, and he retained those responsibilities as Executive Vice Provost. He played a major role in the recruitment, retention, and mentoring of each of the over 55 African American and Latino faculty and professional staff members hired from 1989 to 2003.
As author of several successful grants, Dr. Johnson has been jointly sponsored by Associated Medical Schools of New York State and New York State Department of Education, Science and Technology Entry Program. He has also been sponsored by the National Science Foundation for the Young Scholars Program and the project was continued by the GE Foundation. He served as principal investigator of a $5.5M 5-year AGEP project, “The Central New York to Puerto Rico-Mayaguez (CNY-PR) Alliance for Graduate Education”, funded by the National Science Foundation, as well as principal investigator of a $614,925 3-year Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) project funded by the US Department of Education.
Dr. Johnson is frequently invited to participate in international, national, regional, state and local conferences, including presentations at the American Educational Research Association’s annual meeting, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics annual and regional meetings, and the National Forum for Black Public Administrators.
A member of many professional and learned societies, Dr. Johnson has served on the Board of Directors for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and served as President of the Benjamin Banneker Association. He was a member of the boards of GRE, TOEFL and the Council of Graduate Schools. He served as both President and Vice President of the Association of Graduate Schools and is a consultant and participant in several educational research groups as well as being actively engaged with state and community organizations.
Dr. Johnson and his wife, Dr. Denise Johnson, are the proud parents of two sons.
