Highlights from a Successful Summer

It’s been an eventful summer here on Rocky Top. As we prepare to welcome students back for the fall semester, I hope you’ll join me in taking a moment to celebrate a summer full of record milestones and big wins.

It’s because of the talent, dedication, and hard work of our students, faculty, and staff—along with our partners and supporters—that UT reached new heights in research and philanthropy. Our momentum is creating even greater opportunities for our students and impact on our state.

In the past two months we have celebrated

UT research on the global stage: Millions around the world witnessed UT research in action at FIFA World Cup 26. Our turfgrass experts captured global recognition from BBC, The New York Times, CBS Sunday Morning, and countless other news outlets. And I shared how the lasting impact of this work will benefit the state of Tennessee the most.

World-class talent choosing UT: Eight preeminent researchers and counting have committed to making the move to UT, bringing expertise that will accelerate discovery, solve problems for Tennesseans’, and create new opportunities for our students to learn from the best.

Cultivating rural prosperity: The BRIDGES Initiative won up to $160 million from the National Science Foundation for its work in rural economic development, turning underused farmland into launchpads for biobased innovation.

AI-powered discovery at a national scale: Three UT faculty members in the Tickle College of Engineering earned $20 million to establish ATHENA, one of 20 research hubs in the United States that will form a national network of AI-powered laboratories to accelerate scientific discovery.

A historic investment fueling the future: In June, we celebrated another record-breaking year of giving, including the largest single contribution in university history from alumni Dee and Jimmy Haslam. Their $130 million investment includes funding to help cement the Haslam College of Business as one of the best business schools in the country as well as advance student success and faculty recruitment.

Our successes this summer make me excited for what the academic year holds. Later this month, we will welcome one of our largest classes of first-year students. They will arrive at a university that’s more connected to industry, more competitive in research, and more committed than ever to student success. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this success, both on campus and in our community.
