PEN America: Free Speech on Campus Sessions for Deans, Department Heads, and School Directors

10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2

Room 272 (Ballroom A) of the Student Union

Provost David Manderscheid and Interim Vice Chancellor for Diversity & Engagement Tyvi Small will co-sponsor two days of programming with PEN America (https://pen.org/) on campus on October 2 and 3. “Whose Freedom, Whose Speech? A Workshop on Free Speech and Inclusion on Campus” is a two-hour workshop facilitated by Dr. Jonathan Friedman and Nora Benavidez and will equip deans, department heads, and school directors with a foundational understanding of key challenges at the intersection of free speech and inclusion on campus. The interactive session will explore how administrators can respond to scenarios concerning academic freedom, external speakers, hateful speech, social media, and the classroom environment. Additionally, PEN America facilitators will cover the fundamental precepts of the First Amendment and its application to the regulation of speech on campus, as well as the tools and resources available on PEN America’s online Campus Free Speech Guide.

RSVP by Wednesday, September 25.
