Past Chancellors

From 1794 to 1970, the president of the University of Tennessee was the head of the Knoxville campus, its branches, and extension elements. When Edward J. Boling was elected UT president in 1970, he led a reorganized university composed of a multicampus system in which the heads of the constituent campuses were designated chancellors. Chancellors of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and positions they held prior to assuming the chancellorship, were:

Charles Weaver, 1968–1971 (Dean, College of Engineering, UT Knoxville)

Archie Dykes, 1971–1973 (Chancellor, UT Martin)

John Prados, interim, 1973 (Dean of Admissions and Records, UT Knoxville)

Jack E. Reese, 1973–1989 (Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, UT Knoxville)

John Quinn, 1989–1992 (Dean of the Faculty, Brown University)

William Snyder, 1992–1999 (Acting Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College of Engineering, UT Knoxville)

Loren Crabtree, 2003–2008 (Provost, UT Knoxville)

Jan Simek, interim, 2008–2009 (Chief of Staff, UT Knoxville)
