Online Acts of Hatred

March 31, 2020

Dear Vols,

Yesterday, during a virtual Dean of Students event meant to bring our community closer together, our students and staff experienced an act of racism. The Zoom session was shut down immediately, and private discussions of care and compassion began.

Unfortunately, our campus is not alone in experiencing acts of hatred like this, known as Zoom bombing. We are working on identifying who was responsible and examining how to prevent acts like this from happening in the future. You can read my full statement on the incident on my website.

Most importantly, I want all of our students, faculty, and staff to know that we care about you, and that we commit to working daily to make the University of Tennessee a place—both on campus and online—where everyone matters and everyone belongs.
