History
From 1794 to 1970, the president of the University of Tennessee was the head of the Knoxville campus, its branches, and extension elements.
When Edward J. Boling was elected UT president in 1970, he led a reorganized university composed of a multicampus system in which the heads of the constituent campuses were designated chancellors.
