Plowman named Communicator of the Year by local PRSA chapter
The Volunteer Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America named Chancellor Donde Plowman Communicator of the Year for the Knoxville area. The award recognizes an individual who demonstrates outstanding communication skills in a professional setting.
“When we face challenges, we have to hear and appreciate a variety of viewpoints, work with stakeholders who may have competing viewpoints, and think creatively to find a path forward that is mutually beneficial,” sad chapter president Scott Brooks. “Those practices are fundamental to public relations and to outstanding leaders in other professions, including higher education.”
Brooks praised Plowman for her exemplary efforts in navigating the ever-changing communications landscape and promoting the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
In her remarks following the award ceremony, Plowman noted the importance of communications to her chancellorship. From transparency and accessibility to crisis communication and news, her social and digital channels allow her to reach a wide audience.
“I have learned that I cannot be an effective leader if I cannot tell a story or if I don’t have the right words or tone,” Plowman said. “I have learned a lot from communications professionals, and I understand its importance.”
Additional award recipients include UT alumnus Cole Pawlaczyk, who earned the Ellen Liston Rising Young Professional Award, and student Drue Hamlet, who was named student communicator of the year.
